If you take Latinx influences of life along the San Diego/Tijuana border—and mesh them with a few years in Brooklyn collaborating with a producer that frequently works with Animal Collective/Panda Bear—you are likely to land in this beautifully orchestrated world laced with a distorted ukelele and lush electronic sounds. Layer all that with a perfect blend of English and Spanish pulled from poems and experiences alike, and you get a glimpse into the life of singer and producer Jackie Mendoza.

Mendoza is set to release her debut EP, LuvHz on April 26th via Luminelle Recordings. In March, we were able to catch her set during the Luminelle Showcase at SXSW and to see the songs live is an intimate and euphoric experience. She released her first single from the forthcoming EP a few weeks ago with the track, “Seahorse”. The song has a dark and melodic feel with cascading twinkles and fluid beats that feature Mendoza walking along a dark beach in the accompanying video.

The Latinx influence comes through on the latest release, "Mucho Más,” a much more intense song, where Mendoza takes the opportunity to showcase the lyrics in Spanish—perfectly fitting to the echoing beats. The song has a declarative feel that is rooted from points in Mendoza's life where she had to deal with bouts of anxiety that at times made her not want to leave her apartment. The lyrics in “Mucho Más” can be interpreted as a call to be bold and confront feelings of anxiety with courage and a willingness to explore.

It’s a recurring theme throughout the EP and knowing that makes it an even deeper and more meaningful listen. According to Mendoza, LuvHz ("Love Hurts") is a six-track exploration of love and relationships. The title of the EP encapsulates all types of love and the hurt that can come with it: love in relationships, love for the environment, and love for one’s culture.

LuvHz will be released on April 26th, and you can preorder it [HERE]. Jackie Mendoza will celebrate the release with a Brooklyn show before embarking on a full tour.
